UNI GYŐR ETO HC have won the bronze medal! (Gallery)

Machine-translated from Hungarian.

On Saturday evening, a decisive match took place, with the bronze medal of the Andersen League 2022/23 season at stake. Playing at home at the Nemak Ice Rink, we faced off against DAB-ASP; with the match kicking off at 6.00 pm, all the ingredients were in place for a truly brilliant evening – and we certainly weren’t disappointed.

The top two teams from the regular season took to the ice, hungry for victory and with everything at stake; from the very first minute, it was clear that the large crowd were in for a high-scoring match. We only had to wait three minutes for the first goal, which, fortunately, came from a Győr player, as Barnabás Majoross capitalised on our man-up situation. Five minutes later, Azari equalised, but in the 13th minute, Richárd Horváth regained the lead with a long-range shot following a superb piece of puck control. Shortly before the break, the Dunaújváros side capitalised on our numerical disadvantage with a goal from Kis, leaving the score level as the teams headed into the 15-minute break.

The second period brought back memories of the finest moments of the entire season, with the crowd treated to some truly skilful hockey and home goals. Once again, we only had to wait about three minutes for the first goal, and once again it was Majoross who found the net, following a superb pass from Almási. Barely half a minute later, Márk Almási didn’t just provide an assist; his long-range strike allowed us to convert another power-play opportunity into a goal. Our number 12 didn’t rest on his laurels; a few minutes later, following a fine solo run, he found the net again, extending our lead to three. Győr’s goal spree was still not over; in the 33rd minute, we managed to launch a fine counter-attack, which Filipp Nesterov capped off. We had delivered a devastating third period to the visitors and went into the final period with a comfortable four-goal lead.

DAB-ASP noticeably changed their rhythm for the final period; in the first half of the period, they managed to reduce our lead with two quick goals from Azari and Szabó, but we managed to stem this unfavourable trend, and in the 56th minute, Bence Makovics’s long-range strike ensured there wouldn’t be any more excitement than necessary in the closing stages. In the final minute, the visitors extended their man advantage by pulling their goalkeeper, hoping to end the match with a consolation goal, but we managed to win the puck, which Almási slotted into the opponents’ empty net with just 4 seconds remaining.

This was followed by the official medal ceremony, at which our outstanding player, Márk Nagy, was the first to receive the award for the season’s top scorer from Lévente Sipos, Secretary-General of the Hungarian Ice Hockey Federation, followed by the members of our team receiving their well-deserved bronze medals.

It was a brilliant finale to a successful season; we’d like to thank our enthusiastic audience for their tireless support. We’ll be back in the autumn, hopefully at several venues!
