It wasn’t our sort of evening.

Machine-translated from Hungarian.

We played our final match of 2024 on Saturday evening at the Győri Jégsport, and what’s more, we were in for a real top-of-the-table clash as we hosted Goodwill Pharma Szeged in the Andersen League.

The first period was a closely contested affair, with Győr holding a slight advantage; as an encouraging sign, the only goal of the period was scored by a home player: Ádám Kiss managed to ‘squeeze’ the puck past Garbacz in the 14th minute. (1–0)

The second period took an interesting turn; in terms of shots on goal (23:11), we clearly kept our opponents under greater pressure, but our attempts repeatedly came to nothing, whilst the Szeged side were able to capitalise on these chances with far greater efficiency. They quickly scored the equaliser, and then, 10 minutes later, whilst a man down, they took the lead (Green, Atlas: 1–2). A few seconds later, Bendegúz Jábor received a fine back-pass, which allowed us to equalise, but the visitors were able to repeat what we’d seen at the start of the period: first Zorin, and then, three minutes before the final whistle – whilst on the power play – Green found the net. (2–4)

It was clear that the lads weren’t on form tonight; they failed to reproduce the form we’ve seen in the EUHL, and our opponents capitalised on that. At the start of the final period, the visitors scored twice within a minute, which effectively decided the match. We did manage to score two consolation goals through Martin Sipák and Benedek Madácsi, but in the meantime our opponents scored three more, setting the final score at 4–9.

**We know there are days like this when nothing goes right; unfortunately, this time it happened on home turf.

Our opponents, who fielded 8 foreign players! out of their 15 outfield players, made better use of their chances and deservedly took all three points.

Between the two holidays, we still have an away match in Zalaegerszeg to look forward to, and in 2025 we’ll be back with renewed vigour!**
