We gave the newcomers a goal-fest welcome.

Machine-translated from Hungarian.

On Saturday evening, we also played our first home match in the Andersen League, hosting the newly promoted Egerszegi Titans at the Győr Ice Sports Centre.

As expected, the match began with Győr dominating proceedings, but for a good 10 minutes we couldn’t find a way past the opposition’s defence. In the 11th minute, István Szűcs broke the deadlock, which was later followed by a veritable flurry of goals (1–0).  Barely four minutes later, Bence Makovics broke clear following a fine counter-attack and confidently beat Tóth (2–0). One minute later, the final goal of the period was scored when Barnabás Majoross fired a shot from the blue line that found its way into the net (3–0).

The second period turned into a real ‘fiesta’ in terms of goals: almost immediately after the face-off, Bence Dézsi scored on a power play (4–0).  A few minutes later, the visitors managed to ‘break out’ of the play in front of their own goal; following a fine piece of puck recovery, two players were able to break clear towards Simo’s goal, but they failed to finish the attack; on the resulting counter-attack, István Szűcs did not repeat this mistake on the counter-attack (5–0). After that, the ‘pattern’ of the first period was repeated, with a goal from Szűcs quickly followed by one from Bence Makovics (6–0). Halfway through the period, Barnabás Majoross broke through a group of defenders into the box and skilfully rounded the Egerszeg goalkeeper (7–0). Following the goal, the home side changed their goalkeeper, with Szalai replacing Tóth. There wasn’t much time to settle into the rhythm; within a minute, István Szűcs pounced shrewdly on a rebound to score his third goal of the match (8–0). Five minutes before the final whistle, Martin Sipák won the puck in our own third and, shaking off his defenders, set off on a breakaway; one-on-one with the goalkeeper, he made no mistake (9–0).  The run wasn’t over yet; a minute and a half before the break, our young player, Márton Molnár, who has been called up from the U18s, also scored his first goal in the league. (10–0)! In accordance with the rules, once the 10-goal margin was reached, ‘running time’ came into effect for the remainder of the match, meaning the clock does not stop even during stoppages in play.

There were no goals in the first half of the final period; the ‘deadlock’ was finally broken by Botond Fekete, who found himself unmarked in front of the Egerszeg goal, with ‘only’ Bence Dézsi stood in his way, who cleared a path for the puck with an acrobatic leap (see featured image). (11–0). Shortly afterwards, Dániel Csölle made effective contact with a long-range shot (12–0).  With five minutes to go, Márk Nagy, who was forced to miss most of last season due to injury, also found the net (13–0), and as a final highlight, Márton Molnár also neatly guided the puck into the net (14–0), sealing the final score.

**Fans were treated to a high-scoring match at the Andersen League’s home debut.

On Tuesday, the lads are set for what is expected to be a much tougher match as the 24/25 EUHL season gets underway, with last year’s finalists, Gladiators Trencin, as our first opponents.**
