Even during the long ‘summer break’, work continued unabated within our team, with preparations for the 23/24 season in full swing behind the scenes.
As a university-run team, we place particular emphasis on our players’ higher education, whilst also developing a comprehensive career model.
There was no question that the launch of the EUHL (international university league) was part of this plan, so we did everything we could to take ice hockey in Győr to the next level without any hitches.
In January, we successfully organised the first UNI GYŐR HOCKEY CUP, which was attended by the executive committee of the EUHA. They were satisfied that we met all the requirements for membership and welcomed our intention to join with great enthusiasm.
In June, we were invited to the annual team meeting and awards ceremony, where we managed to sort out all the details, and by the end of the summer it had become official:
UNI GYŐR ETO HC will be competing in the EUHL as well as the Andersen League during the 2023/24 season!
Eight teams are taking part in the competition (five from Slovakia, one from Poland, one from Székely Land and one from Hungary):
- UHT SABERS OSWIECIM
- SAPIENTIA U23
- UNIVERSITY SPARTACUS
- GLADIATORS TRENCIN
- UMB HOCKEY TEAM BANSKA BYSTRICA
- PHILOSOPHERS NITRA
- HC UNIZA ZILINA
- UNI GYOR ETO HC
The UNI GYŐR HOCKEY CUP II will take place from 9 to 11 November, with SAPIENTIA from Székely Land already confirmed to take part, meaning the home crowd will be able to watch both of our matches!
The head coach of our EUHL team will be Mátyás Odnoga; he will be assisted by Lóránt Láday as assistant coach, whilst Igor Toth will take on the role of ‘mentor coach’, helping to build international relationships.
We can say with certainty that there will be no shortage of challenges and exciting matches this year either; it’ll be well worth a visit to the Győr Ice Sports Centre! this season too
